In most homes, your interior walls are graced with framed pictures leaving the main focal point up to the art work. Have you ever thought of using picture frames as creative display or making the “framing” the focal point instead? Picture framing has a lot of variety from minimalistic to ornate with intricate detailing. You may be surprised at the multiple ways to use picture frames in your décor. To get you started I have listed a few creative tricks to turn an ordinary wall into a rooms main attraction:
• Multifunctional purpose: Instead of using traditional framing methods that only have four sides, there are picture frames which are three dimensional that give the look of a shadow box effect that can display décor and frame around an object. This type of framing can be used around a flat screen television to add dimension and serve as a bookshelf for decorative accessories and display. Depending on its depth and size of the framing you choose, you can use the picture frame as the main focal point of the room, or paint the wall behind it in a contrasting color for emphasis.
• Multiple picture frames become art: Instead of trying to choose that one perfect frame, how about group picture frames together in a collage to add visual interest, as well as tell a story or a theme on your wall? Vary the thickness, color, size of picture frames, and use composition style artwork or photographs to make the emphasis about the entire collage telling a story. In a child’s rooms use brightly colored picture frames, even ones they have decorated themselves to bring sentimental value to framed school work and art projects.
• Use picture frames to define space: Many rooms in your home may be very large to house a framed piece of artwork, or you may prefer to think outside the box for your wall décor. How about framing the wall and adding framed art inside? It may sound silly, but molding, and chair rails formed in picture frame shapes can make for a good DIY project of your own. Consider buying large picture frames in matching sizes, and place them on a bare wall. Uses other framed art inside or paint the wall inside the frame, to give emphasis to the creative picture borders you have created. A perfect way to take advantage of negative space on your wall!
There are a multitude of picture framing choices when you think of your home. Consider adorning existing picture frames with faux paint techniques, beads, shells, leather or even metal pieces. Whether you use picture frames for their intended purpose or you decide to be creative and use it in one of the above mentioned ways, see how your wall will take on an instant new life!
