Sculptor: Cha Jong-Rye
By: Georgette Mosley
“Oh Snap it’s Friday” with Korean sculptor Cha Jong-Rye. Having recently exhibited some of her works at the local Bill Lowe art gallery in Atlanta, GA I was able to experience first hand the beauty, craftsmanship and mind-blowing detailing that is so readily apparent in each of her works. Wood is known often associated with having a solid and unwavering form but Rye, with her creations, has reinvented the material so that it reads more like clay. By layering and sanding each piece of wood by hand, a fluid design starts to emerge bringing to life a delicate design filled with drama. Instead of overpowering the wood, her designs work in harmony with the material bringing out the beauty in the wood grain and texture. The collection is certainly a sight to see!
