NOLA: Art Inspiration
By: Jon Peters
Last week I told you all about my trip in the “Big Easy”. It was a ton of fun, and I was really impressed by how artistic and creative everything was. Everything from signs to stores, bars and restaurants were colorful, fun, and most importantly – playful! I got the vibe that things weren’t too serious, and everyone we came across seemed pretty laid back in general. It was fun exploring a new city and seeing what it had to offer.
One of my favorite stops was Simon Hardeveld’s sign shop, who runs a shop behind an antiques store without any website, phone number, or pricing. However, you would be really surprised how much of his work is actually easily spotted around town, from billboards for the local news channel to outside of restaurants and cafes, his work is everywhere. If you want one of these signs, you have to know where to go. Just look for the eccentric Frenchman covered in paint.
Sometime during my trip, we visited the sister’s home of our friend Maggie Overby and it was a gorgeous shotgun-style home, designed with lots of personality and pizazz! Every wall was lined with photos, paintings, and other works of art, in addition to colorful pieces of furniture and decorative pillows. Basically, it was “Happy Chic” perfected! One room in particular was all the way in the back, and was a sunroom with a girly aesthetic for good reason: all the paintings were of women, complete with a gorgeous pink sofa and two white barcelona chairs. Even though it wouldn’t necessarily be my own personal style, it was really refreshing getting to walk through someone else’s home who is just, if not more, into interiors that I am.
We had such a blast in New Orleans, everything was so creative and colorful and I can’t wait to go back to visit really soon!
